His initial five year prison term was extended because he smuggled drugs into prison, and he was placed in solitary confinement from 2012 to 2014 at Maryland's Cumberland Federal Corrections Institute.
The 37-year-old's release came early though as he wasn't scheduled to be out until early 2018.
When Cameron was sentenced to jail, his father, Michael was also battling throat cancer.
In May 2016, he told Fox News' Megyn Kelly:
"It broke my heart, the combination. When he was sentenced, I knew the amount of time he was going to be spending in federal prison combined with my early cancer at the same time."He also told Matt Lauer about his son's jail time:
"Look, my son was a drug dealer and he's been trying to kill himself for a while and I can't condone his behavior," he said. "I think the court recognized his drug addiction as well as the crime that he committed. It's an adequate amount of time...to spend in jail, and the best part of it is he will be able to start his life afresh."He also wrote letters for leniency with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones to help his son, which were made public.
He said:
"The fact that the letters were published was not what we understood". "We believed that they were personal letters to the judge that were to be sealed."Now that Cameron is out, he is ready to tell-all about his experiences and is reportedly writing a book.
A source told Page Six, "Cameron will talk about his struggle being the son and grandson of Hollywood icons, and then his bad decisions which led him to jail, and then solitary confinement.
